Michael Jackson Backing Tracks
I never thought I’d see the day that Michael Jackson backing tracks were a part of my preferred repertoire. But, here I am today with Michael being one of my favourite artists to perform. The man truly was a musical genius. His songs are catchy, his voice is distinguishable, and his musicianship and that of his band members are truly second to none. Having said all that, he’s not really an easy artist to cover because he's had so many band members that it’s just not practical to have a band that size when you’re out playing the cover band circuit.
He typically uses a lot of keyboards, horn shots, strings etc, and the conventional guitar is something he didn’t employ a lot. I’ve heard bands cover his music without all of the instruments there. With some of his songs it’s easier to do, songs like “Beat It” for example. Other songs that are huge hits really only have the guitar as a secondary instrument. This is less than ideal for most performing bands because it can be difficult to find a way to make the guitar cover the missing parts without
changing the whole feel of the song. Sometimes it may not even be recognizable. That’s fine if you’re trying to do your own thing and have a “version” of the song that nobody else does but to be honest, it’s been my general experience that an audience wants to hear any cover song you play, done as closely to the original as possible. I can’t count the times I’ve heard people say things like ”Man… They sounded just like (insert band name here)… If you’ve ever seen a band perform then you’ve likely heard it too. Or maybe you’ve heard they “weren’t even close…” That’s the difference between doing it right or doing it less than well.

In this case we can entertain the notion of using Michael Jackson backing tracks. The backing tracks available at Backing Tracks for Bands don’t include guitars, bass or drums, or any other conventional live band instrument. They come with the keyboard parts, horn parts, percussion if it’s critical to the song etc. Basically the stuff conventional band members don’t bring to the stage. Like all of our tracks they have a left side click and the instruments portion is on the right. Some have vocal cues as well. These tracks are tracks that I use myself and so the cues are on the tracks to suit what I think is important, i.e. count-in/out, cue for bassline to start etc. Using our tracks the guitarist is free to play what was actually played by MJ’s
musicians, which usually adds a lot of “flavour” to the songs.
